If you receive benefits from CalFresh — California’s food assistance program — it’s essential to know when and how to recertify to avoid interruptions in your food stamp benefits. Missing your recertification deadline can temporarily or permanently disrupt your access to monthly benefits.
When Should You Recertify?
Most CalFresh households have a 12-month certification period. To ensure your benefits continue without interruption, you must submit your recertification application by the 5th of the last month of your certification period.
Example:
If your benefits are set to expire in November 2025, you must recertify no later than November 5, 2025. Submitting after this date may cause delays or loss of benefits for the following month.
What Does Recertification Involve?
Recertification requires completing an annual renewal form — typically Form CF 37 — and submitting it to your county social services department. Depending on your county, you may also need to:
- Participate in an interview (by phone or in person).
- Provide verification of recent changes such as income, household members, or expenses.
Additionally, six months after your initial approval, you may need to file a semi-annual report (SAR-7) to confirm that your information remains current. Submitting this report helps ensure your benefits remain active throughout the year.
What Happens If You File Late?
If you submit your recertification after the 5th day of your final month, you may experience a temporary loss of benefits. In some cases, this can lead to partial or full suspension of your EBT card privileges until your renewal is processed and approved.
To prevent delays, make sure you:
- Submit your forms on time.
- Respond promptly to any requests from your county office.
- Keep copies of all forms and notices for your records.
Staying on Track
Timely recertification ensures that your CalFresh benefits continue without interruption, helping you maintain access to healthy food for yourself and your family. Keep track of your certification dates and follow up early to stay eligible for ongoing support.
