Local women receive top state honors

LANSING – Two local women were recognized for their work with Medicare beneficiaries at a recent statewide event in East Lansing for the Michigan Medicare Medicaid Assistance Program of the Region 9 Area Agency on Aging.

Danielle Kleinhuizen and Sarah Skowronski, both employees of the Advocacy Department of the Ostego County Commission on Aging, are certified MMAP counselors dedicated to serving the Medicare beneficiaries in Otsego County, one in a 12-county region.

Kleinhuizen was recognized for the Most Counseling Hours and Skowronski for Most Outreach Hours.

“Both Danielle and Sarah exemplify what MMAP is all about,” said Susan Bowen, regional coordinator of the program with Region 9 AAA. “They truly care about the people they assist and are dedicated to providing high quality customer service.”

The MMAP provides free, unbiased counseling assistance to Medicare beneficiaries to assist them in making healthcare decisions. The MMAP is the State Health Insurance Assistance Program for Michigan, a federal program.

“Truly we are blessed to have such a dedicated group of knowledgeable, compassionate people who enjoy helping others,” Bowen said, “but we are always looking for more volunteers to join our team.”

“Each MMAP counselor is provided with extensive training to ensure they are up-to-date on the latest issues and changes with Medicare. They are a dedicated group of skilled counselors and we are fortunate to have this free program available to Medicare beneficiaries.”
